Museum of Oriental Musical Instruments at Shanghai Conservatory of Music
The Museum of Oriental Musical Instruments at Shanghai Conservatory of Music was formerly “Chinese Musical Instrument Showroom”. As the first musical instrument museum in China’s art schools, it has been open to the public since November 1987. It was expanded in 1992 and 2001, and was moved to its present site in 2006. The museum collects about 500 pieces (sets) of musical instruments, and is divided into four exhibition areas, i.e. ancient Chinese musical instruments, modern Chinese musical instruments, musical instruments of ethnic minorities and foreign musical instruments. Ancient Chinese musical instruments include Jiahu bone flute over 8,000 years ago, imitated Tang pipa and imitated Yi’s chimes (Yi, a marquis in State Zeng), as well as imitated Tang pipa inlaid with jade, agate, etc. Modern Chinese musical instruments include traditional Chinese folk musical instruments such as flute, erhu and zheng. Musical instruments of ethnic minorities include musical instruments of Zang, Miao, Man, Yi and other ethnic minorities in southwest and northwest China. Foreign musical instruments include musical instruments of more than 20 countries such as South Korea, Japan, Thailand, India and Indonesia. The museum is also equipped with “world national musical instrument retrieval system”, “audio guide system” and “group multimedia electronic guide system”.
