Soong Ching Ling Memorial Residence in Shanghai
Soong Ching-ling (1893-1981) was the Honorary Chairman of the People’s Republic of China, Sun Yat-sen’s wife and a famous warrior of patriotism, democracy, internationalism and communism, known as the “National Treasure” and the “Great Woman of the Twentieth Century”. Soong Ching Ling Memorial Residence in Shanghai was the main place for Soong Ching-ling to be engaged in revolutionary activities, and she spent most of her life here. Soong Ching-ling moved here in the spring of 1949, just before the liberation of Shanghai. In August 1949, Soong Ching-ling gladly accepted the invitation of the CPC to attend the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference in Beijing, and was elected Vice Chairman of the Central People’s Government. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, she often met and entertained dignitaries from various countries here, with the goal of promoting foreign exchanges and maintaining international justice. After Soong Ching-ling died in Beijing in 1981, the place was visited by people as the Former Residence of Soong Ching-ling in Shanghai. Since May 1988, it has been open to the public. Soong Ching Ling Memorial Residence in Shanghai is National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit, National AAAA Tourist Attraction, Shanghai Patriotic Promotion Site and Red Tourism Base.
