Former Residence of Tian Han

Located at No.371~381 Yongjia Road, it was built by Tao Zuqian in 1927. It is fake-three-floor brick-and-wood structure with square plane. The facade has a vertical three-section composition. The gate frame of the main entrance is decorated with vertical concave lines, while the gate top is decorated with horizontal decorative lines, together with scroll patterns. Tian Han (1898~1968), born in Changsha, Hunan Province, was the founder of China’s revolution film and play movement and pioneer of Chinese opera reform. Tian Han founded South China Art School here and lived in the ground floor of No. 371 in 1928. Tian Han wrote lyrics for March of the Volunteers, which was determined as the national anthem of the People's Republic of China after the founding of the PRC in 1949. In 1968, Tian Han died in prison due to persecution. The Former Residence of Tian Han was announced by Xuhui District People's Government as Cultural Relic Preservation Unit of Xuhui District on November 30, 2011.
