Garden Residence at No.555 Yongjia Road
Located at No.555 Yongjia Road, the French-style garden residence was built in 1932. It is fake-three-floor brick-and-wood structure with red-tile roofs. The outer walls of the facade are laid with pebbles, with some parts decorated with simple red-brick jointing panels. The building was originally the residence of a British. After 1949, it served as the residence of CAS staff, and academician Yang Xiongli once lived here. In the 1960s, the couple Luo Yujun and Li Heng lived on the second floor. Luo Yujun (1907~1987) was a literary translator. She obtained the degree of Doctor of Literature in University of Paris, France in 1933, and translated World masterworks such as the Red and the Black written by Stendhal. Li Heng, former Director of Shanghai Sheshan Observatory, designed and built a 1.56m-long astrometric telescope which won the first prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award. The Garden Residence at No.555 Yongjia Road was announced by Xuhui District People's Government as Cultural Relic Preservation Unit of Xuhui District on November 18, 2010.
