Former Residence of Nie Er
Located at No.1258 Middle Huaihai Road, the townhouse-style apartments were built in the late 1920s. It is three-floor brick-and-concrete structure. The first floor along Huaihai Road is designed as stores, while the second and third floors are residences. Nie Er lived on the third floor in the early 1930s. Nie Er (1912~1935), born in Yunnan, was a people's musician. He joined the CCP in 1933, and joined Pathe Company and founded Pathe Traditional Chinese Music Orchestra in 1934. He created Song of the Newsboy and other popular songs, and composed March of the Volunteers in 1935. During his lifetime, Nie Er created a total of 37 pieces of music, which were dominated by songs reflecting the life and struggle of the working class. In 1935, he drowned on the shore of Kugenuma, Japan. The Former Residence of Nie Er was announced by Xuhui District People's Government as Cultural Relic Preservation Unit of Xuhui District on November 17, 2009.
