Former Residence of Huang Xing

Located at No.393 Wukang Road, the garden residence was firstly built in 1912. It is in imitation of Italian Renaissance architectural style. The building facing the street has a four-floor reinforced concrete structure, while the other building has two floors. Huang Xing lived here from 1914 to 1916. Huang Xing (1874~1916), born in Shanhua, Hunan Province, was a modern democratic revolutionary. In 1902, he went to Japan for study. After returning to China, he led uprisings in Qinzhou, Guangzhou, etc., and served as commander in chief of the revolutionary army, Chief of Army and other posts. After Yuan Shih-kai usurped state power in 1912, Huang Xing resigned and went to Shanghai, where he lived in this residence. On October 31, 1916, he died here. The Former Residence of Huang Xing was announced by Shanghai Municipal People's Government as Shanghai Municipality Outstanding Heritage Architecture on September 23, 1999, and as Shanghai Municipality Cultural Relics Protection Unit on April 4, 2014.
