Memorial Column of the May 30th Movement

It was built in 1925, with the inscription “In memory of Chen Yuqin who was shot to death and Wu Hengci who died of indignation during the May 30th Movement”. Chen Yuqin (1909~1925), born in Guangdong, was a Chinese returned from Indonesia. He was admitted to the High School Affiliated to Nanyang Public School in 1924. During the May 30th Movement, many schools held anti-imperialist demonstrations. On May 30, Chen Yuqin joined in the parade, and was shot by British policemen to death. On hearing this, Wu Hengci (1908~1925), a student of the High School Affiliated to Nanyang Public School, died of indignation. On June 1, all teachers and students of the school indicated mourning to martyr Chen Yuqin. On November 21, teachers, students, staff members and workers of the school and representatives of different sectors held a memorial meeting for Chen Yuqin and Wu Hengci. Afterwards, Chen Yuqin was buried in the International Cemetery, and a permanent memorial column was set up in the campus for the two persons. The Memorial Column of the May 30th Movement was announced by Shanghai Municipal People's Government as Shanghai Municipality Cultural Relics Protection Unit on April 4, 2014.
