Restoration Technique of Calligraphy and Painting Mounting
Chinese calligraphy and painting mounting is part of the valuable cultural and artistic heritage in ancient China. In 2013, Shanghai-style calligraphy and painting mounting was listed by Xuhui District People’s Government in the list of the fifth batch of District-level Intangible Cultural Heritage in Xuhui District. Chinese calligraphy and painting mounting with a history of over 2,000 years is a traditional craft with national art features developed along with unique Chinese calligraphy and painting. Due to differences in style, pattern, technological operation, etc. of calligraphy and painting mounting of different regions, the mounting art of each region has strong regional aesthetic characteristics and its own strengths. Mounting art is divided into four schools: Suzhou school, Shanghai school, Yangzhou school, and Beijing school. Suzhou-style mounting features flat and soft mounting piece, plain and elegant, harmonious and unified colors, proper fitting, suitable renovation of old works, and exquisite mounting, just as people say, “Suzhou-style mounting is the best”. Slightly later than Suzhou-style mounting, Yangzhou-style mounting is characterized by antiquing and renovating old paintings. No matter how old and broken the paintings are, once mounted, they can become flawless. Shanghai-style mounting is between Suzhou-style mounting and Yangzhou-style mounting. By absorbing and developing their advantages, it has formed its own features, and been called the up-rising star. It is Shanghai-style mounting that has recovered precious painting and calligraphy works handed down from ancient times or unearthed, and has preserved them.
